Private Messaging 2.4678
Today, we’re unleashing Private Messaging 2.4678! Yup, it’s that big of a change, we decided to add an arbitrary number to the version.
We were really surprised by how many people wanted to delete sent messages! But a lot of you are really into scrubbing inboxes and sent messages, so, we definitely wanted to add that and some other tweaks like:
- Threading – messages sent back and forth are neatly organized into one message
- Replied icon to show if you responded to a message or not
- Compose a message
- Send a message to all your friends or subscribers
- and a couple other tweaks…
We hadn’t planned on upgrading Messages for a while (it’s only been a month since we launched it!), but your feedback was so cool that Vikas and I wanted to get these tweaks in right away.
So check it out – keep messaging away and tell us what you think of the new version!

Right now, messaging isn’t working for me, though. It keeps brining me to an error page.
i hate it. get rid of it now please. i bet i’m gonna get tons of chain mail type msg in the next 12 hours. “resend this to all your subscribers in the next 30 sec or a fat old guy will mysteriously walk to your fridge and drink out of your milk carton”. the internet is sad………..
If reply messages look neater is all I can ask for. Earlier, many of the replies I got looked like this:

Someone sent me a message over the weekend that was like a mass message to all of his subscribers and I was sincerely confused about how he did that. But this explains it. Interesting feature. I might try it now. And the organizational stuff also helps a lot.

I love xanga and this feauture rocks but im having a serious issue with you guys responding to my emails about the picture manager and IE7. No one has responded and its been a week and I am a premium member and a long time fan and supporter. I am dissapointed.
Threading? What about that thing on the help-site about keeping hostility down, and being like lawyers only talking to the judge? It is a great idea! Please do not add threading to comments!
I’m only giving 1 eProp, because this new addition makes me uneasy about the possibility of comment threading. Again, please do not do it! Stick to your original wisdom!

I think these new features are great!!!
However, can I send a message to all people in a SAME BLOGRING??? It will be very useful for me to give a message to a group of people.
I also want to send message to SOME (not ALL) of the Friends/Subscribers. As my subscribers are in different world, sometimes I just want to give message to some of them. I think…another method to solve this problem is to let us divide our Friends/Subscribers into different groups such as Family, Classmates, etc.

I have gotten so many messages from people on messenger. I likes it cause you dont have to go to everyones page to comment and if you have something discreet to say to someone it doesnt have to be public.

I love the private message feature, but I really dislike the mass-messaging. It’s like spam. Why have a blog if you’re mass-messaging your subscribers? Unless it’s for the purpose of an emergency to disseminate information that is really important, I see no other use for it and find it annoying when people use it indiscriminately. I suppose you have no say on how it gets used, but I wish there was a way to turn OFF the mass messages, but still get the others.

I didn’t even know you’d launched messages. The only way I knew of sending a message was to go to a user’s profile and click on the “message” link. This is something I’m going to have to check out.
I figured I’d have noticed some form of “Private Messages Inbox” thing on my personal homepage. Maybe this will end up being another hidden Xanga feature (like Boost) that is not readily or easily found but you have to go on a hunt all the time to use it.

As for what Roaring T Rex said…I think y’all should make comment threading optional…just let people indent their comment or something. Also, you could make RYC a feature, because I know most of my commenting is RYC, and it’s annoying to have to either quote the comment or have to go back to the post and see what I said…
There should be a “respond to comment” link that takes you to the person’s most recent post and automatically references their comment.
And so the death of traditional e-mail grows closer …

Eh, I just don’t like private messages in general. I’ve already gotten a few messages saying “Hey, I see you live in my area, we should chat! Look at my profile!” and then gives me some random link. I don’t even go through and delete ‘em anymore.
But regardless of my opinion, the system works.. and fairly smoothly, so yeah.

I want to be able to delete the spam I get from those people who think it’s neat to send messages to all their subscribers and friends BEFORE I OPEN IT. What a waste of time. You facilitated the spam, so how about enabling us to easily delete it.

I didn’t think I’d like the messages because I am a Luddite at heart, but I do, they’re great, all my weird anonymous emails have stopped. Any chance of a bit of html? You could use the same weblog compose screen and have it send as a message rather than submit to public blog maybe?

I love the message feature. It makes talking so much easier. Also it’s nice to be able to have a conversation with someone without filling my comments for each post with like 15 comments from one person.
Just keep adding features that you can think of. But as of now, I’m completely happy with it!

Hi, I would like to be able to set up different groups of friends and then send a message to a particular group of friends. You already have a means for me to group friends and name those groups but I would like to use those groups.

instead of just giving a link to our subs, could you just attach a list of our subs (as in, their usernames), I think that would be better than going to the subs page, ’cause i really can’t remember how everyone spells their names. oh, and friends too

yup. I dig it too. I’m glad that there are more features since I joined three years ago. It is what keeps me here. Private messaging and threading are awesome. When I want to say something that I don’t want anyone to read I just send a private message. No emailing or going out of xanga needed!

If you log in and check someone’s xanga, your username and the site you came from will show up in their footprints log. If you’re not logged in, it will only show the state you’re from and the time you visited. Only paying members can check footprints, but everyone leaves them.

Every time I try to log in, even though I carefully and specifically enter my password, I get an error. AND when I am logged in successfully, and i go to the “Look & Feel” portion, it requests my password again, which I correctly enter and it LOCKS ME OUT. For crying out loud, can you please fix this????

I find it frustrating that the footprints, number of messages, comments etc are never the same (how can the number of footprints decrease???) and suddenly seem to reset themselves to zero when they feel like it. It makes it impossible to keep track of who is viewing your site and how many footprints their really are. As premium paying member I would like to see this fixed. Its so frustrating. And tech support is almost non existent on this issue.

Awesome, I *just* started using my Xanga more than MySpace, and i had no idea that this was a new feature, all i know that it certainly is a nice one! It helps comment a friend personally if the situation is something they’d rather not have so public. Thanks!
Can you PLEASE, PLEASE make it easier to delete messages? Instead of opening each message and deleting, can you make it so I just check a box next to each message in my inbox and delete? Please and thank yous.

it’s nto a bad feature but some people are going nuts with messages! sending bulk msgs to all their subscribers (msgs that are really not necessary consdiering we read their blogs)..
dont suppose you could develop some way of limiting how many bulk messages a person can send each day? or can i limit how many i receive from them?
oh yeah, and a check box for deleteing selected messages would be awesome (I agree with above commetn!)
