  • Xanga TV - now open for users!

    There's a lot of similarities between blogging and TV.  Ever think of your life as a sitcom?  Or compare things that happen in your life to a tv show?   Xanga TV makes it easy to cross that divide.

    Before, streaming on the internet was costly and hard to do, but thanks to the video team - they figured out a way for some users to stream.  We've also built a nice themes system that allows Xanga TV to be supported as well.

    Getting Started

    Note: you have to be premium to try this out

    1.  First log in, and then go here: http://live.xanga.com/XangaTVRecorder.aspx

    The player will automatically start broadcasting

    2Add the module to your sitexangatvinstruct
      Please note that only themes can support this module.
       * Using a new window, go to your public page http://www.xanga.com/home2.aspx
       * Click Edit This Page
       * Click Add Modules
       * Click Xanga TV

    3.
      That's it!
    When you're done, just click Stop.  You can also start your stream by mousing over your Xanga TV module on your site and click + Broadcast.

    We're easing into this feature, so we're only opening this up to our premium users first.  So if you have premium, definitely check it out and let us know what you think - And if you got a cool show going on, drop us a line - would love to see ya on TV!

    This will be fun to see what people come up with ,I enjoy Dan's .I want the chatroom ,but not the TV.

    Is this a wise idea to keep this restricted (hopefully temporarily) to premium members? IMO the potential of any breakout xanga celebrities drawing outside traffic and more potential users would be more appealing than a differential increase in premium revenue dollars.

    oh, the ever-innovative xanga team. keep up the good work, but please not at the expense of xanga's integrity. xanga is what it is because it's distinctly not myspace or youtube. i hope streaming blogs/tv work out. for now, tho i'll stick to text.

    Very cool. I wonder how many bonafide Xanga celebrities come out of this...

    This makes absolutely no sense to me. I have no idea what it's supposed to be.

    I have to agree with the AirGuitarVirtuoso.

    Xanga TV will be the greatest adaptation since MAD TV.

    It would be nice if we could have a separate page for our TV, instead of an always-there-sometimes-on Flash module taking up real estate.

    Otherwise - woo!

    oh, what a test rabbit I was.

    I would like to get more info on how much data will be streamed per second...In SA the broadband cost is still very high....oh and at first try I got the page starting up but could not get any further. To whom am I broadcasting...who can see me? Can I record a broadcasting? How do I see other people broadcasting?

    This is another great idea.

    I tried this out and found that my backwoods wireless broadband could not handle the load of streaming from my computer, and watching the Flash viewer (so I could interact in chat) at the same time.

    Would be nice if either a) the streaming 'recorder' included the chat applet or b) the recorder and viewer were integrated into a single module that should the outgoing stream to the streamer and the incoming stream to viewers, with chat for both.

    To Chris:

    I've seen other people's Xangas who were already using this idea on their page using other programs/sites (such as the previously-featured Ricebunny) and thought it was a great idea.

    One of the ways I explain Xanga to non-users is not by what it is, but by what it is not--it's not just a blog...it's not a myspace or facebook...it's not a media sharing site. It's an amalgamation of all these things. More or less agreeing with airguitar and kirbys, while it feels cool hosting video sessions and answering questions, as long as it doesn't become the focus of people's Xanga pages...then I think it'll be alright.

    I think a way to improve this is to have the tv-and chat sizes resize automatically when put in a different module area. for instance, when I move the module over to the side bar, everything's still the same size, so you see parts of everything and chats get cut off.

    just a though. :)

    Mine is not working :(

    Also had the same problem as the mentioned above by SecksyRx3

    oh man. this is insane.
  • The44thHour

    This seems really cool. I like Dan's, but how are you going to regulate it? Oh, and being no the chat side of this alot, it is easy for the chat room to start lagging when a lot of people are on, but you don't want to move to another room because then you'd miss out on half the comments. So, it would be neat to have live video confrences with a chat room eventually.

    Just a thought.

    Life like a sitcom?  Life like a soap opera, I was SoapOpera and now I'm SavonduJour so I am soooo excited about this. But will I do anything, will I stream my life with pirates in the rainforest, nah, I'm too much a procrastinator, but I look forward to viewing other people's. What about your's?
