New Frontpages!
I’ve been on Xanga a long time and made a lot of friends – I love reading about their lives, looking at their photos, watching their videos. Yet, sometimes I feel like I’ve read everything that my friends have to say…and wish there was more. I’d love to see new, fresh content.
That’s why i’m excited about these new ‘frontpages’ on Xanga (which you’ll also find at the top tabs throughout Xanga too!).
It expands your horizons by providing content on Xanga that is most recent, top boosted, and most viewed. It gives you a sense of what the Xanga community is up to!
Also, since these pages represent the Xanga community, we were thinking of having these pages as our frontpage
! Please check these pages out and tell us what you think!

I like this idea, but it raises a few concerns as to how it is controlled. What kind of measures will be in place to prevent questionable material (naughty pictures, racy videos, etc) from showing up on these new front pages? Will it be limited to material that is rated “A”? What will happen if somebody mislabels something as safe when it really isn’t (whether intentional or not)?
I think it’s a neat idea, but I’d be cautious about making one of these the front page. You never know when something extremely embarassing might pop up and represent Xanga…

an integration of the boosting system into separate frontpages? does the switch to these frontpages mean the demise of eProps (no more Featured content?) as well as the boost newspaper page?
i agree with the first comment, about having “surprises” pop up in these frontpages. the boost system should theoretically take care of that though, right? as long as people are conscientiously boosting the good stuff. but… how about the Most Recent posts? i am guessing the rating system should take care of it, but i think you’re bound to get some unrated & questionable posts that slip thru.
should the tag cloud be at the top right instead of crunched inbetween the two modules to the right?
This is *great* stuff – but where’s the audio? Surely audio would be better than, say, blogrings?
At any rate – I love it, and yes I think putting this on the front page would be a good move.. maybe keep one slot open for the latest announcement or whatever.

Hmmm. the first photo I clicked on brought me to a “Footprints Locked” site. Should locked content appear on these pages?

the front page should consist of “top boosted” though, rather than “most recent” cuz frankly speaking, most entries out there are crap.

in any case, i think it’ll be much more attractive than the current front page, no offensive intended
the boosting system prob needs to be refined a little more though. i know this is a problem for all systems driven by “wisdom of the masses” (digg, youtube, etc) but there’s a good handful of entries that make it on the “top boosted” lists that frankly, the vast majority of xangans wouldn’t even consider worth reading/watching/viewing.
This is good. I came across some really interesting stories by boosting and reading the boosting page.
Jeeves has a good point. When I’m boosting, there’s some ridiculous things that people nominate just because they can. Of course, I and the others just rate them -2 so that in part knocks out the worthless content. I think the boosters are pretty accurate about giving a +1 or +2 if it is actually decent, and a zero if it’s mediocre.
Hah, Jeeves you were #1 in the “top boosted” spot. I agree with you that “most recently updated” is a useless category. If Xanga does keep the “most recently updated”, they should at least make “top boosted” the default category that people arrive on rather than “most recently updated”.

I think an integrated front page would be very cool. This brings to mind a few suggestions I have.
First, I think that audio should be part of the front page. For example, at Bebo the first thing you see are “Bebo Bands” and at Myspace one of the first things you see is “Myspace Music”. I think Xanga’s own unique version of something similar could benefit bands, audio bloggers, as well as people searching for quality audio.
Second, I think eprops should be incorporated into video, audio, and photo blogs. This would give them a chance at ending up on featured content. “Most viewed” or “most listened to” is nice, but I think eprops are a better indicator of what people actually liked.
Third, I think Boost should be more like Digg, meaning you can still boost items on the “top boosted” page. This is one of my favorite aspects of Digg and I think it works well.

a slight problem: For some reason when I use a javascript stat counter from http://www.statcounter.com it cannot track my visitors. I have to use an html counter instead. Even xhtml does not work. Any ideas?
On boosting: I think boosting is useless. I really do. Most recently updated is good because it is nice to visit the recent posts. Most commented is good, because commented posts have something to them. Most eprops is also good…only if people dont comment. How about a most visited category? you have footprints allready, so you can use that basic code. But boosted? I just think it is another version of “eprops”

Very cool. I agree with the first commentor though. I’m a little concerned that when I went to the phot page, I was greeted with not just one but two obscenities.
I check the front page a lot. I don’t like the surprises on some pages. I wish xanga were more clean.

I agree w/ lots of the comments I’ve seen- I don’t like the looks of all the possible obscenities etc. in the videos and pictures. would it be to hard to at leaste show the rating before you click on it? at the very leaste. Maybe myspace has no problem with that and maybe they will just put out whatever they think people think is cool- good stuff or not, but I think that if xanga raises their standards on videos and stuff they will come out on top.

Seems to be great browsing if one is bored!! It is difficult to get a picture of what everybody is doing. Maybe you can have several front pages with different themes as well so that we can choose what we want to see….sort of a quick window facility into Xanga…..but overall “Well done!” Keep up the good work

Good idea about front page but I also concerned about the content standards on the page. Some content could really concern parents and more if the content is suggestive or crude. Those pages would be a windows into xanga. Yet, would those windows turn people away due to content in question?

Very cool, indeed.
It’ll be nice to have a mix of randomly picked photos, videos and weblogs if you want to. But then Xanga won’t be as unique anymore cuz a lot of sites like Tagworld, MySpace, YouTube and others all have the same kind of features. Just an opinion.
And I also do agree that Xanga isn’t very clean when it comes to the ”Featured Content”.
The only problem I have with it is that you took off “Audio”.

I am doing a project, ‘jumpin around the world’ project. Basically you take a picture of yourself jump indivudually or in group, in whatever ways you want. I collect them, and make a book out of it (coffeetable book) and if it interest you, you can buy the book, and part of the money will be donated for charity.
So since I’ve been a longtime member with Xanga, I’d like to ask the Xanga team to be involved on this project of mine. This book will also be ‘advertising’ your skills, talents, or whatever you guys have to bring. And this would be a great way for you guys to get more ‘recognition’.

I think its pretty clear that Xangaians prefer the clean language and photo approach, that why we stay here. People who want the dirty stuff have way more access to that than the clean stuff it seems. So I do agree about the concerns on photos, Vids, and language use. Isn’t there some kind of software that servers use to weed out obvious spam by catching obvious inappropriate words? Also, what with all the ???? for titles? Is that some way to get around things?

AmedeoAmendola, dude you just need to use the correct character encoding. Try any page that has that problem replace the encoding with “Western” or ISO-8859-1 … or whatever xanga uses as their official encoding … most likely Western .. or UTF-8 or .. oh well …

xanga is just fine. Obscenities are the reflection of the users inability to find other more descriptive words to use so if we take them in that context we can realize they do us a favor by showing us how limited their knowledge is. Don’t be offended be happy.

i have no idea where your feedback page is or if you even have one but i wanted to make a suggestion: i hate how when i try to link a photo from an outside site i have to enter in the number of pixels in order for the picture to appear. it should just display the picture in its original size and show you how big it is so that you can resize it if you want. don’t know if this will even be read.. but .. if it is, thanks

Off-topic, but — Why does anyone care if my text editor / weblog editor this is the “deprecated” version? Why do I have to change? The new one loads WAYY more slowly and is all busy and bright and in your face, and sometimes the text box doesn’t work on my computer.
The old version was MUCH simpler and MUCH better — so why does it try to prevent me from posting and change the look of the editor — what does anyone care?
I agree with the first comment and add the pro-ana/mia sites. Those are sicknesses whose sites are continously ending up on “featured content”. That’s bad enough. I’m tired of seeing 16 year olds who think their ideal weight is 88lbs and berate themselves for “binging” on a bowl of cereal.
Why does Xanga continue to promote thise sites by allowing them to take up space on “featured content”? Now throught this newest feature you’re allowing those sites to further promote their sickness to girls who might not otherwise view those sites. Please tread carefully, I have a daughter and that terrifies me when I see things like that.

Is it just me, or is anyone else having a problem accessing their Editor through firefox? The editor just won’t work – it displays some of the text of the editor, but I get no post entry field, and the toolbars won’t load. Clicking “having a problem with editor?” doesn’t help. Seems I’m having a similar problem with Wikipedia too – it suddenly stopped showing all the menu bars, but still displays the page content.
I agree with Randy, more clean!
but then again, no one will type perfect English on their post..

Hi. Recently whenever I click on a link to view a blogring, a blank page comes up with nothing on it except a searchbar, the Xanga link, and two blue bars running down both sides of the page. This is very frusterating, and I think it might be due to the new Snap previewer that it appears Xanga has installed. When I hovered over the link to go to the blogring, the Snap preview appeared, and I was able to see the blogring in the tiny window it provided. However, once I clicked on the link to view the blogring fully and navigate around in it, the same page I described appeared with the two blue stripes running down the sides. I would greatly appreciate it if you would fix this problem, and I am sure that many other Xangans feel the same.

Looks good, modern and up to date. One suggestion, maybe you should make the “Join now” button a little more noticeable and also maybe you should change it to say “Join now for free” because everyone likes something free.
i prefer the look of the current frontpage; it’s cleaner and simpler, which is what a frontpage should be. if there’s too much going on, it’s confusing (especially for newcomers you want to attract), not to mention visually unappealing.
It’s nice that everything’s organized into sections, but at the same time, it seems too crowded together and messy. I like the old frontpage better–it was “cleaner.” This new one gives me a headache just looking at it, no offense. :/
Looking forward to some refreshing change. Hopefully it won’t be raunchy….anyone can get comments with sexual content, ya know? I would rather do it the old fashioned way.
i havent read all these other comments, but …. the front page… i think it should be a little less crowded and have something about “this is what xanga is” like the blogger home page. this looks so myspace-y and kind of… eh.

Someone needs to monitor what is on these.. I have seen DISGUSTING things on here that are rated TOTALLY adult, and yet, I can see them. If I had tried to click on the pics themselves, it would say “Rated whatever”, but on the frontpage, I can see em all!

Chris, I don’t have a clue how to contact anyone about this, but I have a suggestion for the Main Page. When going to Xanga.com I feel that Cursor Focus should jump to Username right away. That way if someone goes to Xanga.com and they want to sign in, they just have to type their name instead of clicking on it. Not to mention your Tab Order is horrible! To Tab to Username a person has to tab through 90% of the page. Check out any of your competitors, they all have good tab orders / focus on entry.

i do not like this new frontpage at all.
the second version i have looked at does make the log in area clearer than the first version of the new frontpage, but i still dislike this format very much.
I chose xanga over MANY other blogging sites because of the WAY IT LOOKS NOW. It is easy to access and use.
I dont give a crap what other xangans are doing. I care about what the people I KNOW are doing. And I already have their xangas. I dont need to know what some middle aged mom blogging in Australia has to say about world peace or some other junk she has in mind. People who use xanga or any other blogging site to make friends…are just wierd. There are so many dangers associated with making “friends” online. Supporting that seems highly irrisponsible on xanga’s part. Although, some people are asking for it by not making their blogs locked. And I do realize that some others are in fact blogging for the public, so I guess that this is simply a case of ‘to each his own’.
Further, if boosted content is to be featured, let’s not make it the center of all the attention.
What I would like to is a quicker video upload time into blogs. I would like to see a way to actually contact xanga when you need help. Wheras, when I have been in need of help with my account, I have had to email any xanga offical email i could find – even if that was to apply for a job or something – just because there was NO way to get through. The FAQ is vague.
My friend and I started xanga about two years or so ago. Thats two people. Since then, both of has have made accounts for different things such as quotes, pictures, icons, funny stories, layouts, etc. In addition to that, we have recruited ALL of our friends to xanga, some of which were already committed to other blog sites – yet we stole them away and made them xanga-loyal. We chose xanga because it was easy on the eyes, easy to learn, and just simple to navigate. Our friends had little difficulty getting ajusted because of the current simplicity of the front page.
The current front page looks very professional, for a blog site. The beta frontpage just looks messy. I do not like it at all. Is it possible to make it an option for xanga users to choose between the old and new? I really really dislike the new one a lot. It would make me extremely sad to see the old frontpage that drew me to xanga in the first place dissapear for this new peice of garbage.
That’s a pretty good idea for the exposure.
Although I’m not too worried about what may find it’s way onto a frontpage, because when I go to something for a random mix of content, I pretty well expect random, in all it’s not always so pleasant glory…

i have to say that the new frontpage reminds me of myspace a lot. & i dont like it. it doesnt save my password anymore & its on the right instead of the left & the blue… ugh. i liked you the way you were xanga
and now that i come here to comment, seeing other people’s comments, i want to say: i really appreciate the freedom of speech on xanga, if people dont like encountering adult material they shouldnt be on the internet. please dont change more.

Hey what’s with this snap thing?? it keeps popping up whenever i cross a link and is really annoying. I’m trying to read the page, not some little pop up. I thought i turned it off, and then it did it again when i opened another page. how annoying.
I really did the like the old front page, the new one is more confusing, I think the old one should be brought back. I also looked at the pictures, a lot of them, had girls with no clothes on, wow thats something to be proud of!

I’m not crazy about it. I also agree with the first commenter.
There have been times when featured photos have actually shown frightening sexual abuse scenes (like when I’m doing a search, or something. Now, if that pops up on the front page, my family willnot be doing Xanga any more. MySpace does more to keep it clean than Xanga, I think, even with their trashy ads.
Sad, ’cause I really like Xanga… but you’re going to lose a lot of people if you’re not careful.
I can’t say that I’m thrilled about this new front page. If anything, I think it’s worse. It looks like one of those websites you go to from a mother site, and they have everything on there to search, except the info you thought was going to be on there.
In theory, the new frontpage is pretty cool, but I must agree with several of the other xangans that what goes up should be filtered a little better. Yes, there are a lot of interesting topics out there, but I would personally want to be initially welcomed by more wholesome/cleaner posts.
But with that said, change is good. It’s something different to look at and definitely makes things more interesting. Keep working at it!

I think I found a 2 Xanga bugs. Look at latest my diary entry and also look at my photo xanga (creates a null picture) with the filename entry (appears to be an HTML overflow of some kind).
Xamga just ain’t for kids any more, I agree with at least 3-4 aomments on this page (Randy7777/Plantiga/BLB/booyahman/mcrib96 wow six of the same thought on one page???)…a lewd or porno pick should never make front page… I want to view front page and am atarting to like it… but in no way should I have to look at another mans junk…

Featured-Shmeatured!!
I heard Xanga is allowing people to nominate entries for the Featured Content thingy. I think that’s very sweet of them. Not all of us can write well enough to get hundreds of comments like the Xangans who once graced the old Featured Content page.
One of my subscribers was telling me how some of my entries should be nominated for the Featured Content. I heard that it’s possible to nominate oneself, but I’m not like that. My entries are like rough drafts of whatever comes into my head and they need a lot of work before I feel comfortable presenting them to anybody outside of my tightly knit group of subscribers/stalkers.
I have no idea what the selection process is like but I’m sure that it’s very subjective. There must be at least several Xanga staff members whom I’ve insulted at one time or another. Oh well. Payback is a bitch, but at least I have deep pockets.
Even IF someone happens to nominate me, I doubt that any of my entries will be approved. I’m sure that my writings must violate at least one of rules required for an entry to be featured. I also think a lot of people must read my entries with question marks hovering over them as they go way scratching their heads. Well, don’t blame me. Wash your hair once in a while!!
Oh well… So here it is:

Please quit making changes and keep Xanga up and running the editor is down again this morning can’t upload pictures. I would a lot rather have a blog I can use than one you are working on all the time and is down a lot. I suggest too that when you expect some down time you put it on the front page of Xanga and then estimated time until it is up again. Judi
Do you all realize what a pain in the ass it is to get your own (as in Xanga’s own javascript) to work with skins? Either update your Skin Tags to include the photo module and pulse, or at least let the damn things run.
It is frustrating to watch you guys come up with great ideas and then follow up with weak implementation.
Yes, we need a place for us who have bands to get publicity. Not all of us like the crap on myspace.
